Dolphin or Mahi-Mahi

The mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) is commonly known as dolphin-fish.

Found in off-shore waters, Mahi-Mahi live approximately 4 to 5 years. Catches average 15 to 29 pounds, and any Mahi-Mahi over 40 pounds is exceptional. Dolphin have a long dorsal fin that extends the entire length of their body. They have very distinct colors: golden on the sides, and bright blues and greens on the sides and back.

Mahi-Mahi are a highly sought after sport fish due to their beauty, size, food quality, and healthy population. 30-50 pound gear is ideal for trolling for Mahi-Mahi. Once on the line, mahi-mahi are fast, flashy and determined to get away.

  • 20-30 lb. lever drag reel, a matched 5-1/2' - 6' stand-up rod and 20-30 lb. mono line
  • Natural baits, artificial lures, feathers, and spoons
  • Often caught when trolling lures on heavy tackle for Marlin
